Description
The
DH82A is a primary trainer, a single-engined biplane, with two seats
in tandem. It is equipped with a de Havilland Gipsy Major engine, 4
cylinders in line, inverted, air-cooled, 130hp, driving a two blade
fixed pitch wooden propeller.
Fuel is fed by
gravity from a tank of 19 imperial gallons capacity located in the
centre section and the lubrication system is fed from an oil tank of
2.5 imperial gallons situated on the left hand side of the fuselage,
behind the engine.
The fuselage
structure is of round and square section steel tube. The front
fuselage extends forward to include the engine bearers. Apart from
the wooden floor and top decking, the fuselage sides are fabric
covered.
The
instructor sits in the front cockpit and the pupil behind. When
flown solo the pilot sits in the rear cockpit in order to maintain
the centre of gravity. Behind the rear seat is a small luggage
compartment.
The normal
instrument panel includes: air speed indicator, altimeter,
tachometer, oil pressure gauge, turn and slip indicator and magnetic
compass.
The wooden
wings are covered with fabric and are of equal span. The lower wings
have a slightly increased dihedral and are fitted with ailerons. The
upper and lower wings are separated by a pair of wooden interplane
struts on each side, in parallel, staggered forwards and two centre
section struts in an “N” form the cabane structure. The
stabilizers, elevators and rudder are made of wood and also are
fabric covered. The aeroplane is not fitted with trimmer tabs
or wheel brakes.
The main
undercarriage has legs with steel spring shock absorbers, one pair
of pivoting axle tubes and a stay tube. The tail skid consists of a
shoe dampened with a spring.
The Uruguayan
Tiger Moths did not have slats on the leading edges of the wings,
nor spin strakes fitted to the top of the rear fuselage.
For the
Uruguayan military aircraft the following options were included:
-
navigation
lights
-
landing light for night flights

-
camera gun
-
hood and basic instruments for “blind flying”
